The Hearst Public Library was founded on December 17, 1974. In its beginning, the library was situated in the basement of the Hearst High School where it shared its space with the school library. On June 4th, 1984, the library moved downtown to a new location situated at 817 George Street, formerly Lecours Smoke Shop. Since July 1994, it is at its present location, 801 George Street, formerly Stedmans.
The library’s collection now contains a vast selection of movies on DVD, puzzles, audio books, audio book readers, phone books, magazines, music CDs, large print books, genealogy research centre, computer stations with Internet access, interlibrary loans, home service for the aged through the Red Cross, photocopy and fax service, outdoor book return box, guided library tours for schools and monthly pyjama nights.
Thanks to Industry Canada, the library has been a Community Access centre since 1998. We now have 6 workstations with high speed Internet access and wireless Internet.
In 1993, the Friends of the library was founded. The funds raised through their various activities go towards the improvement of the library in general.
The Hearst Public Libray board and the staff of the library invite you to visit us and it will be our pleasure to serve you!
Happy reading!
